Julia Sachi Mates is a writer and performer in New York City.

Currently, she is workshopping Seized, a solo musical about her journey with the invisible and visible truths of epilepsy.

There are tons of tales about the seizures I had at Century City Mall, SFO, Rome, etc. It came to my attention that humor had been a fabulous coping mechanism. Once I saw the state of denial I had created for myself in seventh grade when I was diagnosed with epilepsy, I couldn’t go back to just laughing. Alerting the man behind his hotdog cart, “I’m going to have a seizure” and expecting him to step up his game and help? Always hilarious. But there were also voids that had been artificially filled with survivalist resilience over the years. I was told I would grow out of my seizures. Now in my 20s, I’m overhauling the beliefs that got me through adolescence and questioning what I need to hold on to and let go of in adulthood.
